Play is the natural way preschool children learn. While building, role-playing, experimenting, moving and talking, preschoolers develop language, thinking, independence, social relationships and the ability to cope with emotions. Learning through play doesn’t mean there’s no purpose — well-planned activities let children gain knowledge in a way that is engaging, safe and suited to their stage of development.

📌 In this article you’ll learn:

Learning through play – why do children learn the most this way?

Picture a group of children building a garage for toy cars out of blocks. On the surface it’s just play. And yet a lot is happening.

One child is working out how to make a higher wall that won’t fall over. Another is counting how many more blocks they need. Someone suggests a new solution, while someone else has to wait their turn or persuade a friend to try their idea.

During play like this, children develop much more than the ability to build with blocks. They practise concentration, planning, cooperation, patience and logical thinking. They also begin to understand that if something doesn’t work, you can always try again.

That’s exactly why learning through play is one of the most effective ways to support development in the preschool years. A child doesn’t just listen and remember — above all, they experience, test things out and draw their own conclusions.

Why is learning through play so effective?

Children remember best what they can experience for themselves. That’s why play is a natural way to explore the world and gain new skills. It’s much easier to understand why a bridge made of blocks fell over than just to hear about it.

During play children don’t feel the pressure of being judged. They can try, make mistakes and look for new solutions. As a result, they’re more willing to take on new challenges and gain self-confidence faster.

Why are mistakes an important part of learning?

The block tower fell over. The puzzle pieces don’t fit. A friend has a completely different idea for a game.

Situations like these happen every day. It’s through them that children learn perseverance, patience, cooperation and how to cope with emotions.

These are skills that will pay off not only at preschool, but also at school and in everyday life.

What does learning through play look like at Niebieska Przystań?

At our preschool, play isn’t an add-on to learning. It’s a natural part of it.

Every day children build, experiment, create, work on educational projects, role-play and discover the world through experience and playing together.

Instead of giving ready-made answers straight away, we often encourage children to think for themselves. We ask: “What do you think?”, “What could we do differently?” or “Let’s check it together”. This helps them believe in their own ideas and face new challenges with more courage.

An everyday example

While building a city out of blocks, the children were wondering why their bridge kept falling down. Instead of giving them the answer, the teacher asked: “What could we change?”. After a few attempts, the children noticed for themselves that a wider base makes the structure more stable. It was a lesson in cooperation, patience and simple physics all at once.

Does every game have to teach something?

No. Children also need free play, where they decide for themselves what to play and what the rules are.

This is when they develop their imagination, learn to make decisions, build friendships and grow in independence. Not every moment has to be a planned lesson. Sometimes the best thing an adult can do is let a child do things their own way.

Free play often begins when we switch off the cartoon and a moment of boredom appears. We write about how to calmly agree rules for phones and tablets in our article Screens and smartphones for young children.

Does learning through play prepare children for school?

Absolutely. School readiness isn’t just knowing letters and numbers. It’s also being able to focus, cooperate, cope with emotions, finish tasks and look for solutions when things get difficult.

These are exactly the skills children develop every day through play and everyday activities at preschool.

What can you do today?

  • Build something together from blocks, boxes or cushions and ask your child how to make it stronger.
  • Instead of giving the answer, ask: “What do you think?” and give your child time to try.
  • Cook something simple together – measuring and mixing is real maths and science.
  • Leave some time each day for free play, without a plan or screens.

How can I support learning through play at home?

You don’t need expensive toys or special materials. Cooking together, building with blocks, board games, reading books or playing shop are all good opportunities to learn and to build your relationship with your child.
